Here’s what I WISH someone TOLD me before I arri Here’s what I WISH someone TOLD me before I arrived. 📌 SAVE for your future trip to West Africa and SHARE with someone who moght need it. Benin and Togo are two countries full of culture, charm and character- but here’s what you really need to know before you go. 1. ENTRY AND EXIT: Border crossings are slow and random.Whether you’re entering by road or exiting, expect “unofficial fees,” document checks. Stay calm and respectful — things move slower here. 2. LANGUAGE: French is essential.Most locals speak little to no English. A few phrases in French or using Google Translate can make a huge difference in how locals interact with you. 3. CURRENCY: Currency is CFA francs and Cash is KING — and small bills matter. Cards are rarely accepted, and high CFA notes can be hard to break. Always carry small denominations for food, transport, and tips. bring euros or USD to exchange. ATM fees can be wild. Also,not every ATM will work with foreign cards. 4. TRANSPORTATION: Motorbike taxis are the unofficial Uber. They’re cheap, fast, and EVERYWHERE — but always negotiate your fare before hopping on. Helmets are rare, so ride carefully. If you’re not comfortable, arrange a car through your hotel or local guide. 5. INTERNET: Wi-Fi is a luxury, not a guarantee. It exists… but don’t rely on it. Even some nice hotels struggle with consistent internet. Download maps, eSIMs, or key apps before you go off-grid.A local SIM with data is a must. 6. FOOD: Local dishes can be very spicy. If you’re not used to heat, kindly ask for “no pepper” (sans piment) — or brace yourself! 7. POWER AND POWER OUTLET: The power outlets are Type C & E — same as Europe. They use 220V, so check if your devices are compatible. A universal adapter is a lifesaver (especially if you’re coming from North America). Also power cuts happen often in some cities and towns. Bring a charged power bank. Benin and togo might not be on every travelers radar but thats exactly why they’re unforgettable. It is a true world wonder and should be on everyone’s list. Here are a few things to know before you go TICKETS Always buy your ticket ahead of time. About 2-3months early as there are certain number of people allowed into Machu Picchu in a day. When booking the tickets, there are four different circuits. Always opt for circuit 1 and 2 as they have the best views of the ruins. THINGS TO KNOW WHEN YOU ARRIVE ✨There are no washrooms once you enter Machu Picchu, so be sure to use the ones located near the ticket checkpoint before entering ✨No tripods or large cameras allowed ✨No drones are allowed to fly ✨No food is allowed in but you can carry water in ✨It’s a great experience to go with a guide as you learn so much and adds to the whole experience. ✨Just pack layers of cloths if going in the early hours of the morning. It gets hotter during noon. MUST CARRY ESSENTIALS Water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray, Altitude meds, Hats Bonus Tip Machu Picchu is so unreal. Here’s why you need to confirm dates. 1. Most countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6months after your travel date. 2. Standard Renewals can take longer especially during busy seasons. 3. Expedited processing is faster but costs extra money and unnecessary stress. 4. No Passport? You can apply for your first one now too. PRO TIP: Set a Calendar reminder for 9 months before your passport expires.
